There are 76 days to the August 9th, 2022, general elections. As campaigns around the country ramp up, there are calls for deep introspection on the type of leaders to consider for election and the importance of exercising the right to vote. Amnesty Kenya is currently rolling out a campaign titled #ChambuaUongozi, a community led initiative that aims to evaluate the state of leadership in different counties. These community dialogues aim to strengthen civic engagement to ensure accountable leadership.
As such our Amnesty Book Club read for the month of May, “The Havoc of Choice” by Wanjiru Koinange is timely. The book is set in 2007 when Kavata, the child of a corrupt politician, decides to escape after her husband decides to contest for a member of parliament seat in the 2007 elections. The book details the aftermath of the elections and also touches on the impact of corrupt and selfish leaders. Come and let us #ChambuaUongozi together.
